Overview
GotPhoto provides several options for uploading your photos. This guide explains upload requirements and outlines your available methods so you can choose the best fit for your workflow.
Requirements for photo uploads
Before uploading, make sure your files meet these requirements:
- JPG or PNG format only. [Note] PNGs require background settings in your price profile.
- Color space: sRGB
- Max image size: 7,500 px (long edge), 60 million pixels
- Recommended max DPI: 300 (240 DPI for posters)
- Keep file sizes under 8 MB for best performance
Files that don’t meet these specs may fail to upload.
Recommended prep before uploading
- Display calibration: Calibrate your monitor to avoid print mismatches.
- Photo size & quality: Use ~3500 px (long edge) and JPEG quality 80% (Lightroom) or level 9 (Photoshop).
- Aspect ratio: Use consistent ratios (3:2 or 4:3) to minimize cropping.
Choosing an upload method
⚠ Important: To use the Lightroom plugin or FTP, set your job to Planning status. This does not apply to Easy Upload.
Choose an upload method based on your tools and job size:
- Easy Upload: Drag-and-drop tool for Mac/Windows. Automatically builds albums and sorts images.
- Lightroom Plugin: Upload directly from Lightroom via sFTP. Ideal for Lightroom workflows.
- FTP Upload: Use any FTP client to upload images to GotPhoto.
- Alternatively, upload smaller batches or add to albums directly in your web browser. For large jobs, use Easy Upload, Lightroom, or FTP for faster performance.
You can find all upload methods by opening any job, navigating to the Photo Management tab, and clicking Photo upload methods.
FAQs
Can I upload TIFF or RAW files?
No. Only JPG and PNG formats are supported for uploads.
What happens if I upload PNGs without setting backgrounds in my price profile?
Orders will be directed to manual revision if PNGs are uploaded without background settings. This prevents customers from receiving blank-background images. If your images do not require extraction, upload them as JPEGs instead. You can manually release any order flagged for revision.
Why is my photo upload slow?
Large uploads via web browser are slower than Easy Upload or FTP. Use those tools for faster performance.
Can I change upload methods after starting?
Yes. You can use multiple methods for the same job. Note: when using FTP, you may not be able to add images into albums created by a different method; a new folder will be created.
Can I rename files within GotPhoto?
Yes. In Photo Management, click an image in the gallery, select the info icon under the preview, and adjust the filename. The new name will also appear in the shop. Bulk renaming is not supported. Please also note that the name change only applies in GotPhoto, if you download the file from the admin area it will still have its original name.
What does the asterisk (*) next to the total number of photos mean?
The asterisk indicates that image counts recently changed (uploads, moves, resorting, etc.). GotPhoto will recount within about 10 minutes.
The takeaway
Select your upload method based on job size and workflow. For large or complex jobs, use Easy Upload, Lightroom, or FTP for best performance. Always follow file requirements to ensure smooth uploads and avoid issues.
