Pair your Entagged device with your phone or scanner

Table of contents

Overview

Pairing your Entagged device with your phone enhances barcode scanning during photography. This article outlines the steps for first-time setup, re-pairing, pairing with a barcode scanner, and enabling advanced features like the Name List.

Pair the Entagged device for the first time

  1. Plug in your Entagged device and turn on your camera. The LED should light up yellow.
  2. Download and install the Entagged app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  3. Open the app and allow Bluetooth access.
  4. Swipe through onboarding screens and tap START SEARCHING.
  5. Tap the Entagged device when it appears. Tap DONE after a successful pairing.
  6. Allow camera access, so the app can scan barcodes.

Once paired, the Entagged device automatically reconnects and shows a turquoise LED.

Pair additional devices or re-pair

You can connect one Entagged device to multiple phones, but only one at a time. Always check you're using the correct phone when sharing.

Here's a sample:  Jesse and James can both pair Entagged Device #1 with their smartphones; Jesse can use the Entagged device on a Tuesday shoot, and James can use the Entagged device on a Wednesday shoot, but if they are shooting together at the same time, they will not be able to use the same device. Remember: The Entagged will try to pair with any device in range that it has previously connected to, so double-check that you've connected to the correct device if you share your Entagged between users.

If you’ve already paired an Entagged device before, here’s how to pair additional Entagged devices or re-pair an Entagged device after unpairing it:

  1. Turn on your camera with the Entagged plugged in. The LED lights up yellow.
  2. Open the Entagged app and go to YOUR ENTAGGEDS by tapping the Entagged settings icon at the bottom of the app menu.
  3. Select the Entagged device you wish to pair. It will display your camera’s model name once connected.

The Entagged will reconnect automatically. Use the app toggle to disable or re-enable pairing as needed. The Entagged device can only be connected to one app at a time, so if you want to pair and use it with a second phone or tablet, you will need to disable it on the first phone or unpair it.

If no Entagged is enabled, the app switches to a "Virtual Entagged" demo mode. No codes will be sent to the camera in this mode.

Use the Name List feature

[Optional] Only for photographers with a Name List subscription via GotPhoto.

  1. Subscribe via My Account > My Plan in the GotPhoto dashboard. Choose the subscription option that works best for you.
  2. Click + Add device and enter your Entagged serial number exactly. If there is a typo, the Name List will not work. Confirmation dialog after adding Entagged serial number

    • Open the Settings in the Entagged App:
    • Tap the name of your Entagged device:
    • You will find your Entagged serial number to provide to our support team on this screen:
    • In addition, you can check if your Entagged is up-to-date under Firmware. If it is not, tap the update button and keep your camera active for the entire duration of the update by half-pressing the shutter button.
  4. In the Entagged app, navigate to the Name List screen, then log into the GotPhoto account associated with your Name List subscription.
  5. [Optional] If you wish to upgrade to an annual plan from a monthly plan:
    • Cancel the monthly plan
    • Start a new annual plan
    • Activate with your Entagged serial number for the new subscription.

Pair the Entagged device with a barcode scanner

  1. Ensure you have a compatible barcode scanner.
  2. Connect your Entagged device to the camera by following this guide.
  3. Enable Bluetooth Low Energy mode on the scanner. Scan the barcode on the setup sheet or print it from here.
  4. In the Entagged app, go to YOUR ENTAGGEDS > select device > Accessories. On this screen, the app will continually search for available scanners.
  5. Turn on the scanner and activate pairing mode by pressing and holding its button for five seconds while holding it near the Entagged device.
  6. Tap the scanner name when it appears in the app to complete pairing.Scanner pairing screen in Entagged app

7. You’ll hear two sets of beeps after a successful scan and camera transfer. These confirm successful pairing and barcode transfer. The scanner is now successfully paired to your Entagged device. From now on, Entagged will automatically reconnect to your scanner when you turn on your camera and scanner. When scanning a code, press the large button until you hear a series of four beeps:

  • Two beeps going up (low to high): The code was scanned successfully.
  • Two beeps going up (high to higher): The code was successfully sent and saved in your camera.

Unpair your Entagged device

  1. Navigate to the YOUR ENTAGGEDS screen by tapping the Entagged settings icon at the bottom of the app menu.
  2. Tap on the Entagged device you want to unpair. You can also unpair Entagged devices that are not currently connected.
  3. Tap Unpair Entagged.

The takeaway

Once paired, the Entagged device automatically reconnects to your phone when you power on your camera. This streamlines barcode scanning and improves overall workflow reliability.
