Overview
If you can't upload a custom background for your contact sheets, your PDF file is likely too large. The maximum allowed file size is 1.5 MB. This article explains why the limit exists and how to reduce your PDF size so the upload succeeds.
Why file size matters
Our system accepts PDF background files up to 1.5 MB in size. Files created or edited in graphic design tools like Photoshop or Illustrator often exceed this limit.
For reference, the original background template file provided by us is 879 KB — well within the 1.5 MB limit. Use it as a size benchmark when building your custom background.
How to reduce PDF file size
Use these methods to ensure your PDF background meets the size requirements:
- Use compression options: When exporting to PDF, select a lower-quality or high-compression preset. In Adobe Photoshop, choose File > Export > Export As and lower the image quality. In Adobe Illustrator, use File > Save As > Adobe PDF and select the Smallest File Size preset.
- Avoid unnecessary elements: Remove unused layers, images, or embedded fonts that can inflate the file size.
- Use PDF/A format: Select PDF/A as the export standard. PDF/A strips features like embedded JavaScript, encryption, and external references that are unsupported and add file size. In Adobe Illustrator, choose this under File > Save As > Adobe PDF > PDF/A-1b.
The takeaway
If your custom background still fails to upload after following these steps, confirm your PDF is under 1.5 MB and exported in PDF/A format. If the problem persists, contact our support team for further assistance.
